Golden Navy

This project in Amstelveen was all about expanding a classic Dutch house to make it work for a growing family. I managed the entire process from start to finish, which included creating all the furniture layouts, detailed technical plans for the contractor, and comprehensive electrical and lighting design. This thorough approach ensured the construction phase ran smoothly while making the home highly functional for daily life.
To improve the overall flow, we extended the back of the house and completely changed the ground floor layout. We integrated a massive 3 meter skylight into the new extension to bring as much natural light as possible deep into the home. In the kitchen, we went with deep blue cabinetry, warm gold lighting, and clean lines. During the renovation, we had to deal with a major load bearing pillar in the kitchen area that could not be removed. Instead of trying to hide it, we turned it into a design feature by wrapping it in the exact same wood material as the herringbone flooring and using it to hang the pendant lights. Right next to the kitchen, a large, deep sectional sofa defines the family lounge space, balancing the bold colors of the kitchen with soft, neutral tones under the naturally lit ceiling.
One of the best layout changes we made on the ground floor was converting the old garage. We repurposed the entire space into a quiet home office that doubles as a comfortable guest room. Since it sits right off the kitchen, we also added a small, private three piece shower room so guests have everything they need on the ground floor. For the dining area, we added classic wall moldings and painted the accent wall in a soft blue gray tone to give the space its own identity. We paired it with a dark, textured dining table, mustard gold chairs, and minimalist ring pendant lights to keep it feeling cozy but sophisticated.
Moving upstairs, we replaced the old, winding Dutch staircase with a straight, modern one. This required careful structural planning and a detailed electrical layout to integrate the hidden LED strip lighting under each step, creating a soft, subtle glow that adds both safety and warmth at night. By opening a new structural walkway to the space above the garage and reworking the attic, we managed to add two important rooms. First, we created a practical attic setup where we built custom cabinetry under the roof slopes to completely hide the washer and dryer, leaving enough floor space for a dedicated TV lounge area under the skylight. Second, we designed a playful yet calm kid's bedroom featuring a cherry blossom wall mural that adds character without overwhelming the space.
The main bathroom required layout planning down to the centimeter. We managed to fit both a freestanding bathtub and a separate walk in shower without making the room feel crowded, using warm stone look tiles and rose gold fixtures. For the guest powder room, we went with a moodier, high contrast look with dark tiles, a fluted wood sink vanity, and a gold ceiling fixture that creates a nice shadow pattern on the walls.
