This private residence in Amstelveen was transformed into a modern and functional family home through a complete redesign of the ground floor and the addition of a dormer upstairs. The client wished for a sleek extension in gray and black and a new kitchen, and the project grew into a full rethinking of the way the house could work for family life.
The kitchen was moved to the front of the house and designed in refined shades of gray with integrated lighting and clean lines. This allowed the rear to open up into a generous living and dining area connected to the garden. To solve the challenge of new construction beams and a concrete ceiling, the dining area was slightly lowered, creating a more intimate atmosphere. In the kitchen a lowered ceiling was introduced to conceal structural elements and to provide the perfect place for recessed lighting.
Upstairs a new dormer created two additional bedrooms for the children. Bright and compact, these spaces add comfort and functionality for the growing family.
The palette throughout the home is based on gray and black, enriched with touches of soft blue. In the living area the TV wall, bar stools, and dining chairs bring in gray blue accents, giving depth and character to the monochrome base. Large windows in the extension connect the home to the garden, ensuring that the darker tones always feel balanced with natural light.
This home is about balance: between function and mood, openness and intimacy, structure and design. The result is a space that feels modern, welcoming, and perfectly tailored to family living in Amstelveen.
